As I mentioned in a previous post, I sought my good friend and experienced documentarian Cianna Stewart for some insight into the filmmaking process. She was kind enough to make herself available to answer some of my questions regarding documentary pre-production process.
Here’s some of the key take-aways:
- Start with a script of where you see the story
- Talk to as many people as you can
- Be willing to discard the script when these conversations lead you outside your original script
- Sound quality! If it’s good sound, it’s a good take.
First thing she urged me to manage was music licensing. I can’t agree more, as filmmakers James Spooner (Afro Punk) and Susan Dynner (Punks Not Dead) brought this very thing as an issue early on in the QA for their films.
Cianna recommends I contact Women Make Movies for resources on this. I’ll be reaching out to them, and looking to contact others who can assist in getting me on the right track.
